How DOTs find hazards early and win public support

Projects from state DOTs and the firms they work with, on Road Safety Audit 3D and 3D Visualization, each with what it changed.

  1. Aerial view of rural southwest Virginia with the study corridors highlighted in green

    VDOT Shoulder Rumble Strip Planning

Every 10 feet lane and paved-shoulder widths measured from LiDAR, where manual surveys measured every several hundred feet.

VDOT's Salem District replaced measuring-wheel surveys with RSA 3D, turning mobile LiDAR into lane and paved-shoulder widths every 10 feet to find the roads wide enough for shoulder rumble strips.

  2. LiDAR point cloud of a rural Kentucky road lined with trees, seen from the driver's position

Road Safety Audit 3DKentucky Transportation Cabinet2026

    KYTC Guardrail Warrant Analysis

389 segments where guardrail may be warranted, 8.98 miles in all, found across 122.7 roadway miles in about four hours.

RDV Systems set up RSA 3D with Kentucky's own embankment and guardrail criteria and ran it on LiDAR KYTC had already collected, analyzing 122.7 roadway miles in about four hours.

  3. Aerial view of the Garland Avenue and Cleveland Street intersection on the University of Arkansas campus

Road Safety Audit 3DUniversity of Arkansas2026

    Garland Avenue & Cleveland Street

31% visible the lowest vehicle result, for a right turn onto Garland Avenue with Garland traffic at 35 mph.

After pedestrian incidents at a busy campus intersection, the University of Arkansas and Olsson used RSA 3D to measure how well drivers and pedestrians can see each other, movement by movement, in one LiDAR-based 3D model.

  4. Aerial view of Telegraph Road winding through Stafford County, Virginia

Road Safety Audit 3DStafford County, Virginia2026

    Telegraph Road Corridor

6 analyses stopping, passing and intersection sight distance, curves, safe speeds and clear zones, in one digital environment.

RDV Systems used mobile LiDAR, high-resolution imagery and RSA 3D's automated analytics to find sight-distance, geometric and roadside hazards along the whole Telegraph Road corridor, with far less field work.

  5. Ray-traced 3D rendering of the Henderson Interchange

    3D VisualizationNevada Department of Transportation2021

    Henderson Interchange

65+ miles of drive-through video across 17 routes, all made from one model within a couple of days.

C A Group used RDV's 3D Visualization model to produce more than 65 miles of drive-through video for public outreach and RSA 3D to catch and correct sight-distance deficiencies before construction.

  6. UDOT stopping sight distance report screenshot from RSA 3D

    “We Had No Idea”

Existing roads RSA 3D adapted to audit Utah's roads from the LiDAR scans UDOT already commissions every year.

UDOT partnered with RDV Systems to adapt RSA 3D to analyze stopping sight distance across Utah's existing road network using annual LiDAR scans instead of CAD design files.

  7. I-26 / SC-27 Interchange 3D model, drone-level view

3D VisualizationSouth Carolina Department of Transportation2019

    I-26 / SC-27 Interchange Reconfiguration

3 designs compared in one interactive model at SCDOT's first public meeting using 3D Visualization.

RDV Systems built an interactive 3D model of three alternative SC-27 interchange designs so SCDOT and Mead & Hunt could present them at their first public meeting using 3D Visualization.
