Enhancing Public Engagement Through 3D Visualization

Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) sought to improve Texas State Highway 6 at Pine Forest Lane near Clay Road in Houston. The project aimed to widen the highway and redesign a signalized intersection to accommodate increasing traffic volumes while enhancing resilience to flooding. To support public outreach, TxDOT engaged RDV Systems in February 2023 to develop clear, engaging visualizations of alternative intersection designs.

Challenges

TxDOT and Jacobs Engineering faced a critical challenge: effectively communicating the differences and benefits of three proposed intersection designs to the public. The alternatives included:

  • Traditional Intersection– A conventional design with traffic signals.
  • Displaced Left-Turn (DLT) – A design that improves traffic flow by shifting left-turn movements before the main intersection.
  • Continuous Green T-Intersection (CGT) – A solution designed to reduce congestion with uninterrupted through-traffic movements.

To ensure transparency and facilitate public input, TxDOT needed compelling, accessible visual materials for a public open house and the project website.

RDV’s Solutions

RDV Systems delivered high-impact visualization tools to enhance public understanding and engagement:

  • Interactive 3D Models – Dynamic, detailed digital representations of all three intersection designs.
  • Traffic Simulations – Integration with VISSIM traffic models to depict realistic traffic flows and signal cycles.
  • Bilingual Media Content – High-quality images and narrated videos in English and Spanish, with clear captions explaining each alternative.

Impact of RDV’s Deliverables

RDV’s visualizations played a crucial role in the public engagement process:

  • Public Open House – The 3D models, images, and videos facilitated meaningful discussions with community members and stakeholders.
  • Project Webpage – TxDOT published the deliverables online, ensuring ongoing access to critical project information for the public.

RDV’s Value Proposition

DV Systems provided TxDOT with innovative tools that transformed complex engineering concepts into accessible, visually engaging presentations:

  • Rapid TurnaroundRDV’s efficiency in developing high-quality visualizations ensured that public engagement efforts remained on schedule.
  • Flexibility & AdaptabilityThe interactive nature of the models allowed for customized visuals tailored to stakeholder needs.
  • Enhanced Communication By simplifying technical designs into clear, compelling visuals, RDV fostered transparency and informed decision-making.

Conclusion

RDV Systems demonstrated their ability to deliver scalable, high-quality visualization solutions that enhance communication and public engagement in transportation planning. This project underscores RDV’s commitment to empowering agencies with cutting-edge tools that bring engineering concepts to life.
